This book is moving, heartbreaking yet uplifting. It revolves around the tribulations of an Asian girl who was forced to run away from home to avoid an arranged marriage. She was able to see all her elder sisters go through the planned marriages and she did not like how it was turning out for them. Jasvinder runs away with her then boyfriend and they try to build their life even though it's not as easy. She is disowned by her family even though she tries so hard to be in touch with them. This book opens us up to the rituals of the Asian community such as arranged marriages, honor killings, caste system, patriarchal societies, boy child being valued more than the girl child and so on. Jasvinder saw a gap in the Asian community where the women had no where to turn to when they were met with abuse or planned marriages with much older men and founded an institution that would cater for their needs. The book however ends abruptly, but quite captivating all the same.
